Adventure is the exhilarating journey of discovery you take when you live your true purpose in life — stepping out of your comfort zone, venturing out in the world, and trying new things, doing things differently, exploring your world, trusting yourself and others, taking a chance on life, and investing in your dreams.
This is where fear will normally show up to make sure you don’t get very far. That’s Dread, which as we know from the eBook, is the deep subconscious belief, “I dread venturing out into the world, because life is scary, people can't be trusted, there is not enough, and progress is pointless. I may as well stay ‘safe’ in my comfort zone.”
That belief doesn’t want you venturing out into the world, because it still thinks you’re a toddler, where every time you took a step forward towards something new and exciting — someone stopped you.
You heard gasps of terror, maybe yelled at — before someone ‘appeared out of nowhere’, picked you up, and put you all the way back to where you started venturing from — rewarding you for staying put in the cot, playpen, or someone’s arms (the comfort zone). That made progress seem futile, and the comfort zone seem way more appealing.
So to keep you ‘safe’ from the futility and overwhelm of movement, fear tries to make you dread your purpose in life so much, you either don’t do it, or you limit your progress so much, you rarely leave the comfort zone.
That dreadful program still lives inside you as an adult — otherwise known as the fear of survival, adventure, trusting others, change, progress, or being uncomfortable.
This is where you’ll find yourself thinking:
"It's too risky. The economy is bad. It's unsafe." (Catastrophising)
"What if something bad happens?" (Anxiety)
"There's not enough time, money, opportunity, resources" (Lack)
"What if people let me down or don't support me?" (Distrust)
"There's just too much to do" (Overwhelm)
"I can't be bothered doing it now" (Apathy)
"I'll do it next week/month/year" (Procrastination)
"I'll do it when I have more..." (Stalling)
"I need to know how before I start" (Resistance)
"What's the point of doing it now" (Hopelessness)
"I'll just do this first instead" (Distraction)
"Things are going too well. Something bad is about to happen" (Apprehension)
You’ll feel anxious, nervous, or even slightly panicked about your decision — so you never do it. Or you’ll overthink everything — planning, tweaking, waiting for the right time — but never follow through. Or you’ll do it, but make a soft commitment, so there’s an easy escape route if things get too uncomfortable, inconvenient, or tricky.
Or, you’ll shrink your purpose to make it smaller and ‘safer’, effectively sucking the excitement out of it, so you eventually get bored and quit. Or you’ll limit your own progress — put it off, skip steps, half do things, get distracted. Or you’ll actually get moving, but have that constant worry that everything is going ‘too well’, and it's all about to turn to shit at any moment.
You’ll basically lock yourself into a boring routine doing what you've always done , in the same old ways, at the same level (comfort zone) — which then leads to stagnation and boredom.
