When people ask me what the true purpose of life is, I tell them, “Well! There is actually four of them – adventure, talent, passion, and wisdom!”.
And why is there four of them! Well, because there are four main aspects of the mind, that govern pretty much everything you think, feel, and do; and hence there’s four ways to live. And adventure, talent, passion, and wisdom simply represent the highest most-positive ways to do that.
And so I’d like to show you what each one of those four aspects are, how to live them in your own life, and how living them will lead you to a life of greatness, that will eventually make you feel amazing. And it all starts with adventure, so let's start with that.
And adventure doesn’t mean you have to climb mountains or bungee jump off a cliff. Adventure is simply stepping out of your comfort zone. And that means breaking your routine by trying new things, doing things differently, exploring your world, taking a chance on life, investing in your dreams, and so on. And that’s different for everyone.
For some people, the greatest adventure they can handle right now is going out in public to get a new haircut. For others, it might be selling everything they own, moving their entire family to Iceland, and starting up a geo-thermal-powered organic goat cheese factory! It’s whatever you can do, and whatever you can handle, to add more excitement into your life.
And your adventures need to be exciting otherwise you just won’t do it. That's because excitement is the only force powerful enough to overcome the deep subconscious fears that have previously held you back from doing it. Those fears include the fear of not enough, fear of change, fear of failure, fear of criticism, fear of rejection, and so on. It’s a very long list.
Therefore, if you choose to do something that really excites you, and the excitement is greater than your fears, the excitement will overpower you fears, so you actually get out there and do it. And you’ll still feel the fear as you do it, because fear is a natural part of any new adventure. But because you’re so excited about doing it, and excitement is slightly more motivating than fear, you’ll feel the fear and do it anyway.
And that’s why adventure is so exhilarating. Because exhilaration is the feeling of greater excitement mixed in with a little bit of fear, otherwise known as butterflies in the stomach, arh the thrill of adventure, or the excitement of new things and change. Not only is that a really fun way to face your fears and overcome them, but it will also add a lot more exhilaration, wonder, and discovery into your life.
And that brings us to the second aspect of purpose, which is talent. And talent is not competing with others to be the best. Talent is being the best you can be. It’s a competition with self, rather than a competition with others. And you compete with self by continuously learning new techniques and bettering your skills, so you just get better and better at what you do, to eventually outgrow yourself and your abilities.
And mostly because it’s just great fun, challenging yourself like that, just to see how good you can get at it. But it also helps you develop all the skills and techniques you need to do things easier, and solve problems, and overcome failure, so you actually enjoy what you do!
In other words, talent isn’t how good you are at doing something; it’s how much you enjoy the journey of getting better at it. And that could be sculpting a great artwork, or sharpening a pencil. It doesn’t matter. If you enjoy it, and want to get better at it, it qualifies as a talent. And that journey towards more and more talent, will add a lot more capability, self-confidence, and success into your life.
And that brings us to the third aspect of purpose, which is passion. And passion is doing what you really want to do, in the ways you really want to do it, rather than doing what others expect you to do, just to keep them happy, or fit in, or be liked more, or avoid conflict, and so on.
And that’s not being selfish; that’s being true to self. Because you’re an exceptionally unique individual. There is a single other person on this planet, that has the same combination of personality, interests, perceptions, skills, or life-experience that you have.
Therefore, you should do things in your own unique way. I mean obviously, you still have to honour your responsibilities and roles; and respect the rules of society. But, you have every right to be yourself, and express yourself in ways that best suit who you are as a person. Because that’s what adds originality, creativity, innovation, and exceptional talent to the world. And passionately sharing that unique point of difference with others, is also a major part of passion. All of which will add a lot more fulfilment, individuality, and impact into your life.
And that brings us to the last aspect of purpose which is wisdom. And wisdom should not be confused with knowledge. Knowledge is just an opinion, based on what you know, or what you've learned, or the general knowledge and supposed-facts of society. But none of that is true for you, until you take that knowledge and apply it in your own life, to prove to yourself, if it’s actually true for you or not!
That’s lived-wisdom, and that’s really the onlytruth. Because you’ll find that so much of what others believe is true for everyone, is not actually true for you. And so much of what you believe is true for you, is not actually true for others either. There is only your own truth gained from your own lived-wisdom.
But you still have to be open minded and teachable enough to at least consider everyone elses beliefs and opinions. But assume none of it is true, until you have proven it to be true for yourself in real life. Because the more of your own truth you find, the more you can let go of the opinions and beliefs of others, and instead follow a path in life, that you know is true for you.
And following that path will be your greatest adventure, develop the most talent, and defend the most passion, to help you discover even more truth. All of which will add a lot more certainty, purpose, and understanding into your life.
OK. So that’s the four aspects of purpose covered. Now lets look at how they make you feel. Because livingany one of those aspects will make you happier. But if you can find something to do in life that equally satisfies all four aspects at once; then you’ve hit the jackpot. Because that’s a true purpose, and that’s going to make you feel amazing.
And if you don’t know what your true purpose is, and you’d like to know how to find it and live it in your own life, then download my free eBook “Find Your True Purpose in Life”. You can get it by clicking here.
Anywho. If you live a balanced life, that equally favours all four aspects of adventure, talent, passion, and wisdom, you’re going to feel the effects of more exhilaration, wonder, and discovery; more capability, self-confidence, and success; more fulfilment, individuality, and impact; and more certainty, purpose, and understanding.
And when you combine all of that together, you will feel the master feeling of joy.
And the word “joy” has lost a lot of its original meaning, so I often use the word “en-joy”. And it’s separated with a hyphen like that, to highlight the prefix “en”, which means to encircle or surround. Therefore, when people see the word “en-joy”, it reminds them to surroundthemselves in joy, by living the most adventurous, talented, passionate, wisest life possible! Because that’s how you en-joy yourself, en-joy other people, and en-joy the journey of life!
And joy is an amazing feeling. At its least, it’s a feeling of contentment, peace, and happiness. But at its height, it’s a blissfully purposeful feeling that can fill your eyes with tears of joy, and make you grin like a crazy person.
But en-joyment is only half of the feel-good picture. The other half is love. And not the lovey-dovey, kissy-kissy, Valentines Day version of romantic love. But love in the sense of you love what you do, and that happens anytime you share your true purpose with others, to help them in some way. And a true purpose gives you a lot of ways to do that.
For example. Your adventurous spirit can be used to excite and encourage people! Your talents can be used to skilfully-assist and serve people! Your passions and unique self-expressions can be used to creatively inspire people! Your wisdom and personal truth can be used to enlighten and mentor people! And your joy itself, can be used to uplift people!
And when you share yourself with others like that, the sharing is a lot more about them, and a lot less about you. And when you take your self out of the picture like that, you take your ego’s inherent negativity out of the sharing. And with less negativity, the feeling of joy within you, naturally shifts to a much higher vibration of emotion, which you experience as the feeling of love. You feel love, and the people you help will feel loved.
That’s how you love what you do (literally). You’ll also love sharing it all with others, they’ll love what you share, and they’ll love you back for sharing it. You’ll even love yourself more as you share it. Love, love, love.
And it’s often not even recognised as love. Most people just assume they’re feeling good because they’re helping someone, or they feel good because someone is helping them. But that feel-good feeling is love. And you'll feel it any time you share your adventurous, talented, passionate, wise qualities with people, to help them in some way!
In other words, love is simply sharing your best self with another, to help thembe a better version of themselves. And that applies whether you are a parent raising a child, or helping a friend in need, or serving a customer at work. When you help them, you love them. Which is probably the truest and simplest definition of love I can think of.
And love is as equally amazing a feeling as joy but it’s grander. At it's least, loving-service will make you feel helpful supportive and important. But at its height, loving-service will add so much purpose and meaning to your life, it will also fill your eyes with tears of joy, except they’ll be tears of loving appreciation.
And so. If we sum all of that up, the true purpose of life is as follows. Find something you can do in life that excites you, that you can do to the very best of your ability, in your own unique way, to find your own true path in life, so you not only enjoy what you do, you also love what you do. Now that’s a true purpose.
