The 4 Signs

There are four signs that clearly indicate you are not living your true life purpose, and they are boredom, frustration, depression, and confusion.

And when we've done workshops about this topic in the past, and asked the audience to raise their hands if they suffer from one or more of these symptoms; pretty much everybody in the room raises their hand, and most of them suffer from all four symptoms. And again, that’s because most people are not living their true life purpose.

That’s not my opinion either. That’s an observable fact. I’ve been talking to people about purpose for more than three decades, and I very rarely meet anyone who is living on purpose, doing what they really want to do in life, and being who they really want to be as a person. I'd say it's about one in ten people … if that.

In fact, I believe living off purpose is one of the Western World’s biggest and most insidious problems, yet so few people are aware of it, and even less talk about it. So let's talk about it, and let's start with the mind.

The Mind

First of all, your mind is not the brain. The brain is just a 1.5 kilogram chunk of tissue and it's particularly dumb. It doesn't think for itself; it simply processes the thoughts of the Mind. The mind however, is a whole different story. The mind is a very powerful, wise, and loving spiritual force. It's contained within the body, and also extends out of the body, all the way back to your Soul, or higher self, or God, or whatever you want to call it.

In other words, your mind - or at least your higher-mind that's connected to these higher parts of you - is a lot smarter than you think you are, and it's constantly trying to get you to live your true purpose in life.

The mind does that with emotion. It works in conjunction with your heart, creating emotions that help guide you in the right direction. If things in life genuinely feel good, your mind is trying to let you know you’re on the right track, and if things in life genuinely feel bad, your mind is trying to tell you you're on the wrong track.

And I use the word genuinely, to distinguish between genuine purpose (heartfelt emotion), and ego-based or self-destructive "feel-good" feelings that often get us into trouble. For example, feeling good about developing your skills or being more motivated are genuine purpose-related feelings; whereas feeling good about eating cheeseburgers and fries for every meal, are pleasure-based feelings based on food addiction. In other words, you know deep down if what you’re feeling, is good for you or not.

Ok, now that we know the mind uses emotion to genuinely try and help you live a better life, let's now have a deeper look into how the mind uses the four emotional symptoms of boredom, frustration, depression, and confusion, to let you know you’re heading in the wrong direction, and lets behind with boredom.

Boredom

Boredom is your mind telling you you’re not living enough adventure in your life. You’re not trying enough new things, or exploring your world, or doing what you’ve always wanted to do, or challenging yourself enough. This means there is not enough excitement in your life, and a lack of excitement allows your fears to get the better of you, and keep you trapped in an overcautious comfort zone of “safe” routines, which eventually leads to stagnation and boredom.

Frustration

Frustration is your mind telling you that you have stopped improving yourself, and instead have settled for some level of mediocrity. And that’s not a judgement. It simply means you've stopped learning new skills, or you’ve lost the willpower and patience required to practise your skills into talent, or you’re relying too much on others to do things for you. Your abilities may well be good enough to get by, but not good enough to do things really well, and if you can’t do things really well, you're more likely to feel frustrated, impatient, disappointed, with yourself and your accomplishments. That leads to higher levels of self-doubt and self-criticism, which are both very closely related to depression.

Depression

Depression is your mind telling you, you’re not doing what you really want to do in life, and or in the way you really want to do it. You are instead, doing what everybody else expects you to do, in the way they think you should do it. Instead of living your dream, you are living the nightmare of trying to keep other people happy, or gain approval, or fit into the crowd, or avoid conflict.

This means, you can't be yourself, which means you can’t express yourself, and when you don't express; you get depressed. You're basically being someone you are not, and when you're not yourself, you feel down, blue, or depressed. And that depression can easily turn into deep depression, which is that miserable, sad-anger feeling, very closely related to the aforementioned frustration, self-criticism, and self-doubt.

Confusion

Confusion is your mind letting you know … you don’t know. The reason you don’t know, is because the three previous symptoms of boredom, frustration, and depression have limited your life-experiences to the point where you don’t know what you like-dislike, what you're good at and enjoy doing, who you really are as a person, or what in your life has proven to be true. And when you don’t know those things, it’s very difficult to know what to do in life, and that’s confusion.

The Solution

And so, what's the solution? How do you counteract boredom, frustration, depression, and confusion? Well, the solution is to simply do the opposite.

For example, to relieve boredom, step out of your comfort zone, and live a more adventurous and exciting life. To relieve frustration, improve your skills into talents, so you can do things easier and with more success. To relieve depression, let go of the expectations of others, stand up for yourself, and express your true self with passion, by doing what you really want to do, in the way you really want to do it. And to relieve confusion, get to know yourself better, so you understand what to do in life, by doing all the above.

Did you know, the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to do that, is by living your dreams? In other words, find out what really excites you and just do it; do it really well; do it your own unique way; and do it to know thyself more.

If you were to do that somehow, anyhow - in your hobbies, lifestyle, pastimes, or career - everything takes care of itself. Your new adventures, improved skills, better self-expression, and deeper understanding will naturally and gracefully overcome your boredom, frustration, depression, and confusion.
